This community-led documentary was co-produced by young women from Bishop Lavis, Uitsig, Clarkes Estate, and Wallacedene in Cape Town, South Africa. They acquired HIV through vertical transmission and share their experiences of growing up with a lifelong condition and taking medication from a very young age.
Many are orphaned. Across this 40-minute film, they share their joys, grief, challenges, and dreams, including economic hardship, community violence, and HIV-related stigma. This is their story.
More Than a Pill was named one of the 2023 winners of the Inclusive Health Research awards, established by Nature Awards (part of Springer Nature) in partnership with Takeda. The three winning projects shared a €20,000 prize.
